It all depends on whether you have minimal, mild, moderate or severe acne. Usually, mild forms can be effectively treated with topical (applied on the skin) medications. Therapy for moderate-to-severe forms of acne are wide ranging and can include topicals and oral (taken by mouth) medicines, such as antibiotics, contraceptives or retinoids. New therapies that are still under investigation include lasers and light sources. Successful treatment of acne generally takes a combination approach and is best achieved under the supervision of a qualified physician. You and your doctor can decide on a treatment plan that’s right for you to help slow or even stop the development of new blemishes. It’s important to follow your doctor’s advice in order to get your acne under control and prevent scars from forming. Make sure to choose makeup and skin care products that are listed as non-comedogenic – these are less likely to clog pores and cause break-outs.
